If you’re approaching 65 years old or are currently 65 years or older, you’re probably considering Medicare coverage. Medicare is a health care coverage for people 65 years or older, people under 65 with certain disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. Medicare consists of several different parts with specific enrollment qualifications to entitle you to coverage. What Does Medicare Cover?
Medicare helps cover a few specific areas:

Part A – Medicare Part A, also referred to as hospital insurance, covers inpatient hospital stays, hospice care and some parts of your health care.

Part B – Medicare Part B, also known as medical insurance, covers specific doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventative services.

Part D – Medicare Part D, also known as prescription drug coverage, helps cover the cost of prescription drugs and many recommended vaccines or shots.

Medigap – Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplemental Insurance or referred to as Part C, is extra insurance you can purchase in addition to you Part A and B coverage that helps pay for your share of costs in your other coverage.
How Does Medicare Work?
When you sign up for Medicare during the specified enrollment periods, you are able to choose the way in which you receive your coverage. There are two main ways:
Original Medicare

Includes Part A and B

Can use any doctor or hospital in the United States that takes Medicare

Can purchase Medigap to help cover out-of-pocket costs in your Original Medicare

Can include Part D to cover prescription drug costs
Medicare Advantage

Medicare-approved plan from a private company that offers bundled plans

Typically have to use doctors that are within the network

May have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare

Offer additional benefits such as vision, hearing and dental
